TORONTO - A temporary publication ban imposed in the court case into the slaying of an Ontario girl is drawing some criticism.

One of the suspects charged in the death of Victoria Stafford, 19-year-old Terri-Lynne McClintic, was scheduled to appear in a Woodstock, Ont., courtroom Friday facing a first-degree murder charge.

But a judge dealing with the case has imposed a publication ban that prohibits media agencies from saying virtually anything else.

Both the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star have published front-page editorials taking issue with Judge Dougald McDermid's decision.

The Star's headline is "Gagged" with one of two editorials pointing out that open courts give the public confidence that justice is being done.

A second front-page Star editorial contains blacked out sections indicating where details would have been written.
