A three-alarm fire engulfed an Annex heritage home at 146 Bedford Road, near Avenue and Davenport Roads, on Tuesday afternoon.

Toronto Fire Services was called at about 1 p.m. and rushed to the scene with several trucks. The house's roof collapsed and debris flew through the air as fire hoses doused the building with water.

Approximately 150 people were evacuated in the area amid concerns the fire would spread to neighbouring buildings.

There were no injuries, according to police.

The home is owned by an Armenian family that runs a nearby flower shop. They had spent six months renovating the house and are currently living in an apartment in the same neighbourhood.

A plumber was working on the home, built in the late 1800s or early 1900s, when the fire broke out. He immediately went to the family's apartment to tell the owners about the blaze.

Neighbours who spoke with CP24 say they're feeling lucky that their house is still standing.

"Even though the firefighters got here right away, the damage happened so quickly," says Suzanne, who lives across the street from what's left of the house.

"Just because your house is made of brick you think it's not going to go down... But it can happen so easily to anybody's house."

There is no word on whether the destroyed home was insured. The fire department says more than $500,000 of damage was done.
