TORONTO - A Toronto panhandler convicted in the stabbing death of a St. Catharines man has been sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 12 years.

Nicole Kish, 24, was found guilty of second-degree murder on March 1.

Court heard she repeatedly stabbed 32-year-old Ross Hammond on Queen Street, west of Bathurst Street, in August 2007.

Court was told during the trial that Hammond and his friend George Dranichak were bar hopping in downtown Toronto when they got into a verbal altercation with a woman who asked them for money.

Dranichak told the trial the woman started screaming and a crowd suddenly appeared, and then the two men became separated.

The Crown alleged Kish attacked Hammond with a knife, while defence lawyers argued someone else could have stabbed the victim in the melee. Kish did not take the stand during her trial.
