TORONTO - The world championships may have been moved from Tokyo to Moscow, but Toronto figure skater Patrick Chan still has Japan in his thoughts.
The 20-year-old Chan will perform at an ice show this weekend in Oshawa, Ont., and he'll donate half his skating fee to the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in earthquake-ravaged Japan. He'll give the other half to a scholarship fund in memory of his late coach Osborne Colson.
Don Jackson, the 1962 world champion, will also perform Saturday night.
Chan's performance comes just three weeks before the world championships in Moscow, where the Canadian will be a favourite to claim gold. He's the two-time defending world silver medallist and won the Grand Prix Final this season.
The world championships were originally slated for last week in Tokyo, but those plans were cancelled in the wake of the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. Moscow's Megasport arena will host the event April 24 to May 1.
