Few people take a dip in Lake Ontario at Toronto's beaches, despite tests that show the water is clean enough to swim in.

The Toronto Star reports that Toronto's beaches are rated amongst the cleanest in the world under the Blue Flag Programme.

Beaches with the special designation meet strict environmental and safety standards.

However, few people go for a swim in the water.

A Toronto Water spokesperson told the Star that the city's Blue Flag beaches would rival any beach on Georgian Bay

Ontario has the toughest recreational water standards in North America allowing only 100 parts of E. coli in 100 mL of water. Anything above that point is not safe for swimming. The national standard is 200.
