A hockey player for the Whitby Dunlops is in a coma after being injured in a fight that broke out during a game on Friday.

Don Sanderson, 21, was involved in an altercation with a Brantford Blast player early in the third period of Whitby's 5-2 win. The Port Perry native's helmet came off before he fell to the ice causing his head to hit the rink surface.

Sanderson, who attends York University, is in Hamilton General Hospital and he is listed in critical condition.

The team's website is plastered with updates on his condition. It says he is "still a long way from recovery but there is some optimism... after Don had some movement in his arm."

The site also includes an email form where fans can send their "well wishes" to the Sanderson family.

The Whitby Dunlops are an "AAA" level team and part of the Major League Hockey, which is the highest level of senior hockey in Ontario.
