Toronto city Coun. Michelle Berardinetti is planning to table a motion to order the Toronto Zoo's board to move its elephants to a sanctuary in a warmer climate.

Berardinetti wants the three pachyderms to be moved to a sanctuary in California instead of a zoo.

Berardinetti said a group named Zoo Check has offered to cover the $300,000 cost of transferring the elephants to the U.S. sanctuary.

Moving the elephants would save the city roughly $600,000 per year in operating costs.

City council has the authority to direct the zoo's board.

Berardinetti will be on CP24's LeDrew Live at 9 p.m. to discuss her motion.
