OTTAWA - The NDP signalled today that it might be willing to prop up the Harper government and avert a fall election.

MP Paul Dewar says his party may be willing to support Conservative legislation that would extend EI benefits to long-tenured workers.

He says it appears to be a "good start," but his party will need to study the bill when it is introduced.

He says it would be "irresponsible" not to support the bill if it really helps workers.

Earlier today, NDP Leader Jack Layton said the party is ready for a fall election, but would prefer to stay on the job in the House of Commons.
