MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Ontario's police watchdog has been called in after a 42-year-old woman was killed in a collision while being transported by provincial police in Kenora.

The Special Investigations Unit says officers were transporting a woman in custody to the Kenora detachment at about 2 a.m. Sunday when their cruiser collided with a tractor trailer.

The SIU says the woman died as a result of the collision while the officers and the driver of the tractor trailer did not suffer serious injuries.

Three investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist from the SIU are investigating the incident.

The SIU is an arm's-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
