Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal crash that shut down part of the QEW in Burlington for several hours Tuesday morning.
A 36-year-old man was killed when his car crashed into the back of a tractor trailer in the Fort Erie-bound lanes, just east of Guelph Line, at about 2:15 a.m.
Ontario Provincial Police said the man was the lone occupant of the vehicle and he died at the scene.
In a news release, OPP said they don't know why the Toyota Matrix crashed into the back of the trailer.
When the collision occurred, officers were conducting “speed reduction patrols” to protect maintenance crews who were working nearby.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been a serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
The SIU has assigned seven investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to the case.
The Fort Erie-bound lanes were closed at Walkers Line until about 8:35 a.m.
