A nine-year-old boy is dead following a single-vehicle rollover on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Oakville on Monday, Ontario Provincial Police say.
The collision occurred in the westbound lanes of the QEW, approaching Burloak Drive, shortly after midnight.
In a news release issued Monday, police said a pickup truck hit the ditch and rolled before coming to rest upright. The 38-year-old driver of the vehicle, a resident of Hamilton, was transported to hospital with serious injuries. A nine-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle and transported to hospital without vital signs. He was subsequently pronounced dead in hospital, police said.
Another passenger of the vehicle, a 28-year-old, was uninjured and remained at the scene, police added.
The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for about six hours following the crash.
“The potential lack of seatbelt use is being investigated as a contributing factor in the collision,” the police release read.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
