A woman in her 20s is fighting for her life in hospital after police say she was struck in a hit-and-run in Mississauga shortly after midnight on Wednesday

Video obtained by CP24 shows the moment a pedestrian was struck by the vehicle, which appeared to be speeding eastbound along Bristol Road, near Terry Fox Way.

In the video, the pedestrian is seen crossing the street. The pedestrian stops and appears to begin to back out of the way of the speeding vehicle immediately prior to being struck.

“This motor vehicle fled the scene continuing eastbound on Bristol Road,” police told CP24 in an email.

“The pedestrian was transported to a trauma centre where she remains with life-threatening injuries.”

According to police, the woman was crossing the intersection on a green light when the collision occurred.

A resident of the neighbourhood told CP24 Wednesday morning that when he saw the emergency vehicles outside, he checked his security camera footage to see what had happened.

In the footage, he said it appears the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision.

“It seems to be a very tragic incident,” he told CP24.

The suspect vehicle has been described as a black Honda SUV and investigators said it likely has “extensive damage to the front end.”

The area was closed to traffic for several hours for the police investigation but has since reopened.

“Anyone with any dash cam footage or information is asked to contact investigators in our Major Collision Bureau at 905-453-2121 ext 3710,” police said.

Speaking to CP24 on Wednesday, Const. Richard Chin said neighbours and body shops should also be on the lookout for dark vehicles with front-end damage.

“If you are the driver, we would encourage you to seek legal counsel, turn yourself in,” he said. “It is only a matter of time before we locate who you are.”
