An 87-year-old man is dead and another man in his 80s has been charged after a homicide at a city-run nursing home Saturday morning.

Police have identified the victim as Francisco DaSilva, a resident of the Castleview Wychwood Towers nursing home near Christie and Dupont streets.

Police were called to the 5th floor of the home around 8:45 a.m. Saturday for a medical complaint. Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from obvious injuries to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensics officers were called to the scene, but police wouldn’t comment on whether a weapon might have been used.

“There is evidence at the scene and we’re not going to disclose what that is at this time,” Det. Ted Liousmanis told reporters outside the nursing home Saturday afternoon.

The exact cause of death has not yet been determined. Liousmanis said a post-mortem exam would likely be conducted Sunday.

Another resident of the home was arrested at the scene. Police say there’s no indication the suspect has exhibited violent behavior in the past.

No motive has been established so far, Liousmanis said.

Asked whether mental illness might have been a factor, Liousmanis said it’s still too early to say.

“It’s very early. The homicide squad has taken over now. That’ll be part of our investigation, to look into that,” he said.

Police say the suspect was the victim’s roommate.

The families of both the victim and the accused have been notified, Liousmanis said.

Francesco Greco, 81, has been charged with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Sunday.
