A Caledon residence sustained serious damage after a fire broke out in the garage of the home Monday night.

Firefighters were called to a home on Atchison Drive at around 10 p.m. and discovered heavy flames coming from the garage and the second-floor roof.

Mark Wallace, deputy fire chief for Caledon Fire and Emergency Services, said at the height of the blaze, 30 firefighters were on scene trying to knock it down.

The occupants of the home were not injured in the fire.

“They smelled smoke, they were investigating where the smoke was coming from. They saw there was fire in the garage area and they evacuated the home and called 911,” he added.

Neighbouring houses were also damaged in the fire, Wallace said.

“The adjacent houses sustained some melting to the exterior shingles and one house sustained damage to the gas meter and their electrical so that has been shut off and isolated on that side,” he said.

Officials have not yet released the cause of the fire.
