Eight people sent to hospital in Kawartha Lakes crash

An OPP vehicle collided head-on with an SUV on Highway 35 in the Fenelon Falls area

A serious collision that closed Highway 35 on Friday sent eight people – young and old – to hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has released a preliminary statement about the Kawartha Lakes crash that involved an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser.

SIU states:

  • On the afternoon of Friday, an OPP officer was traveling southbound on Highway 35 near Somerville 3rd Concession.
  • At around 3:10 p.m., the cruiser was involved in a collision with two vehicles – a Honda CRV traveling southbound on Highway 35 and a Hyundai Palisade traveling northbound on Highway 35.
  • A total of eight people from the three vehicles were taken to hospital:
    • Cruiser: Police officer
    • Honda CRV: 23-year-old woman driver
    • Hyundai Palisade: 82-year-old male driver, 76-year-old woman, 72-year-old woman, 45-year-old woman, 48-year-old man and a male youth.

The SIU has assigned four investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist on the case.
