An 11-year-old boy was killed and eight others were injured in a hit-and-run crash that closed a stretch of the QEW in Beamsville for about eight hours Tuesday.

Sgt. Dave Woodford, a spokesman for Ontario Provincial Police, said multiple people were ejected from a minivan when it rolled in the QEW’s Toronto-bound lanes, near Bartlett Avenue, at about 3 a.m.

Nine people were in the van. Two were rushed to hospital in critical condition, while a baby was among six others who were injured, Woodford told CP24.

One of the occupants was trapped under the overturned vehicle, he said.

Investigators believe some of the occupants were not wearing a seatbelt because the van has seatbelts for seven people, Woodford said.

He said officers are having some difficulty gathering information from the survivors because of a language barrier.

Police looking for truck driver

Woodford said investigators believe the van was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer before it rolled into a ditch.

He said the tractor-trailer did not stop at the scene. The driver and the vehicle have not been located.

Woodford said the tractor-trailer is a white Volvo that likely has extensive damage to its front end, possibly to the passenger side.
