OPP officers in Peterborough “had a few anxious moments” last week after someone brought a live World War Two-era mortar shell into the detachment.

Police said a “well-intentioned citizen” brought the shell into the Peterborough County OPP detachment sometime after 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 3.

Officers took the shell and isolated it in a secure area. Members of the explosive ordnance disposal unit at CFB Trenton arrived later and destroyed the shell.

Police warn anyone who finds unexploded bombs, shells, landmines or grenades not to touch or move them. The best thing to do is record any numbers visible on the item and call police.
