More than a year-and-a-half after sexual predator Samuel Moderie was sentenced, a new documentary is giving his victims a voice.
Nicknamed the “Tinder rapist,” Moderie, who lived in the Montreal area, is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to more than 20 counts of sexual assault involving 13 victims.
As part of his disturbing scheme, he would meet women on the popular dating app, then drug them and rape them. He also filmed some of the abuse during the encounters.
The documentary miniseries “Le violeur de Tinder” (“The Tinder Rapist” in English) was released Wednesday on Crave. Over three episodes, Moderie’s victims confide in each other about what they experienced, even though several of them had no recollection of the abuse.
“He is one of the worst sexual predators Quebec has ever known,” said Vanessa Boisset, director of the documentary, in an interview with Noovo Info.
“The idea of the project was, in particular, to denounce the mechanisms of chemical subjugation because he was not just sexually assaulting them, he was drugging them.”
Boisset said she hopes to shed a light on the dangers of dating apps, which was a key component of the sexual assault case, and to explore the complexity of the investigative process that led to the arrest and conviction since the victims had little memories of the assaults.
Moderie was arrested in 2023 and pleaded guilty in the fall of 2024. When he was sentenced on Jan. 22, 2025, he was also placed on the sex offender registry for life and was labelled a long-term offender, which includes a 10-year surveillance period after his release.
