Environment Canada is warning motorists that their commute may be a tricky one Wednesday as blowing snow reduces visibility in open areas.

In a special weather statement, the national weather agency said strong winds will whip up freshly fallen snow in southern and eastern Ontario.

Most regions are receiving a coating to a couple of centimetres of fresh snow, but Environment Canada is telling people to be prepared for snow squalls to the southeast of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

According to the special weather statement, dangerous driving conditions are expected and travel into those regions is not recommended.

Because of the strong winds, the lake-effect snow bands may extend far inland at times.

Motorists should be prepared for a sudden change in the weather conditions and hazardous driving conditions.

Snow squall warnings were issued for Perth, Huron, Bruce and Grey counties, while watches were issued for an area from London through Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph to Barrie.

School bus cancellations

Because of the weather and road conditions, some school boards have cancelled school buses for the day.
