The woman who died after falling more than 20 metres off an escarpment in a conservation area in Milton Thursday morning has been identified as a Toronto firefighter.

Paramedics said they were called to Kelso Conservation Area after receiving a report of a cyclist who had fallen at around 10:30 a.m.

Halton Regional Police Sgt. Barry Malciw said the woman was mountain biking in the conservation area with one other person when she fell off of her bike and plummeted off the cliff from a height of between 21 and 24 metres.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11 a.m.

This afternoon, the Toronto Professional Firefighters’ Association identified the victim as 38-year-old Sara Rosen. She was a firefighter at Toronto Fire Station 443 in Etobicoke.

Speaking with CP24 Thursday night, the head of the firefighters’ union described Rosen as an outgoing and active member who graciously gave of her time to help others.

“(She was) just an absolute great individual,” Toronto Professional Firefighters’ Association president Frank Ramagnano said. “I wish all my members were like her.”

Ramagnano said he had been inundated with messages of condolences from different charities since they learned of Rosen’s death.

“They knew of Sara and the amount of work that she had done,” he said.

Ramagnano said that Rosen, who has been with Toronto Fire Services for 15 years, had just gotten into law school in the United States and had announced her intention to take a leave of absence.

Fellow firefighters were “extremely shocked” by news of her death, he said.

“We are saddened by the passing of #TorontoFire Fighter Sara Rosen,” Toronto Fire Services said in a tweet Thursday evening.

“Our thoughts are with family and friends.”

Rosen also volunteered as a City of Toronto positive space ambassador.

“There was no challenge she couldn’t meet,” Ramagnano said. “She was a firefighter for three years when her brother needed a kidney, and when they couldn’t find one, she stepped forward and gave hers.”

Rosen was an avid mountain biker.

“She just loved doing it,” Ramagnano said.

Kelso Conservation Area is located south of Highway 401 and south of the Glen Eden Ski Resort.

In an update shortly after 9 p.m., Halton police said that Rosen's body had been recovered.
