OSHAWA, Ont. -- An Oshawa, Ont., man is facing several charges after police say a fleeing suspect ran through a downtown daycare centre, forcing the daycare to be briefly locked down, although no one was injured.

Durham regional police say the incident happened Wednesday at about 1 p.m. when an officer tried to pull over a vehicle and the driver instead sped away.

It's alleged the suspect drove past a daycare, where he narrowly missed hitting a man carrying a small child, then parked in the daycare parking lot and ran away.

Police say the suspect ran through the daycare building and exited from the back door before jumping over some neighbouring backyard fences to escape officers.

After a search involving a K-9 team, police say the suspect was found in a nearby yard and taken into custody.

Sean Simard, 21, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of failing to stop for police, driving a motor vehicle while suspended and taking a vehicle without consent.
