A 72-year-old pilot of a float plane is in hospital in serious condition after his aircraft plunged into a Peterborough-area lake, hitting a barge full of summer camp kids before becoming fully submerged in the water.

The first emergency responders to the scene were able to pull the pilot from the wreckage and perform CPR.  He was transported to Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

The crash happened just off the Gannons Narrows Marina.

A 17-year-old camp counsellor who was on the barge at the time of the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Though a number of other people were on the barge, no children who attend Camp Maple Leaf were on the vessel and no other injuries were reported, according to Iain McEwan, the media relations officer with Peterborough County Ontario Provincial Police.

He said technical investigators with the OPP will be attending the crash site along with other officials from the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Transport Safety Board, Nav Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard to try and collect evidence from the scene.
