A stubborn four-alarm fire at a store in north Etobicoke is now under control, a representative with Toronto Fire Services says.

“The fire is under control right now,” division commander Len Stadler said at the scene. “The crews did a great job.”

The call for the fire at the fabric store in a plaza on Albion Road, near Islington Avenue, came in at around 6 p.m.

The fire began in the basement, Stadler said. Rolls of fabric housed on steel shelves allowed the fire to spread quickly.

Rapidly deteriorating floor conditions inside the store made it dangerous for crews to fight the fire from inside the building.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

No injuries have been reported.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and Coun. Vincent Crisanti both arrived at the scene shortly after 11 p.m.

Speaking with CP24, Ford said he was there to make sure that anyone who was displaced by the fire would have somewhere to stay.
