An industrial fire shut down a number of local roads in Innisfil Monday and sent plumes of black, toxic smoke billowing into the air.

The blaze also set off a series of seven or eight successive explosions. Police said they believed the blasts were exploding propane tanks.

The fire started shortly before 12:30 p.m. near 2nd Line of Innisfil, west of 10 Sideroad. Police received a call that a building believed to be a warehouse with farm equipment inside was fully engulfed in flames.

Heavy winds carried the smoke away quickly, but police issued a warning to motorists to avoid the area.

Fire crews responded and the fire was put out shortly before 2 p.m., though some smoke was still coming off the smoldering remains.

The fire department said the blaze is not considered suspicious.

Police originally said the roads were expected to reopen around 3 p.m. They later said the roads would likely open around 8 p.m.
