Coun. Jon Burnside wants to put cameras at stop signs around the city to discourage drivers from breaking the law and to create safer streets.

The Ward 26 councillor said he plans to pitch the idea to city council’s public works committee, which is meeting Thursday.

“What I am looking to do is get the province together with the city and with the Toronto Police Service to investigate the potential of this. The reality is, we have a lot of concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic in general and the only way to really change drivers’ behaviour is by increasing the likelihood of getting caught,” Burnside told CP24.

“With police resources being so strained, we need to look at more efficient way of doing that.”

Burnside represents the Leaside neighbourhood where seven-year-old Georgia Walsh was struck and killed by a vehicle in July.

“That technology can also be applied to prohibited turns, pedestrian crossovers as well,” he said.

The Don Valley West councillor said the cameras would not be stationary but would move to from stop sign to stop sign.

“The idea is that if you never know where you could get caught, that people will actually start obeying the law,” he said.
