A 19-year-old man is dead and an 18-year-old man has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a pickup truck lost control and plowed through a guardrail on the Don Valley Parkway early Saturday morning.

It happened at Spanbridge Road near Eglinton Avenue at around 5:30 a.m.

The southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway were closed at Eglinton Avenue as police investigated, but reopened at around 10:45 a.m.

“The catastrophic damage to the vehicle alone indicates that speed is definitely an issue with this particular crash,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 at the scene. “The exact speed hasn’t been determined, but will be determined once we get the data from the (black) box.”

The victim, who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, has not been identified pending notification of next-of-kin.

According to Stibbe, police were originally told that a third victim may have been ejected from the vehicle but have since ruled that possibility out.

“The witness at the hopsital informed us that possibly another individual may have been in the vehicle but we have checked the area and found nothing and the thermal imaging camera from the fire department was unable to locate any heat signatures,” he told CP24. “At this point we are fairly confident that there were only two individuals in the vehicle and we have accounted for those parties.”

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact police at (416) 808−1900 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222−TIPS (8477).
