OTTAWA -- Provincial police say they have charged an Ottawa city councillor with corrupt practices after an investigation into alleged irregularities during this year's municipal election campaign.

Ontario Provincial Police say they began an investigation in August into Timothy Tierney, who was running for the seat of Beacon Hill-Cyrville at the time.

The OPP say Ottawa police requested their help and their anti-rackets squad began looking into allegations of improprieties during the campaign.

Tierney says in a statement that police are alleging he offered to give a donation to a charity for a person to refrain from becoming a candidate in the municipal campaign.

The 44-year-old says he is prepared to defend himself fully and will continue his work as a city councillor.

The OPP says Tierney, who has been a councillor since 2010 and won his seat last month, has been charged with corrupt practices under the Municipal Elections Act.
