A 58-year-old female pedestrian is dead following a hit-and-run in downtown Toronto early Wednesday morning.

Police say the woman was crossing Sherbourne Street mid-block south of Dundas Street at around 1 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle that then left the scene.

There was a watermain break in the area at the time, however it is not clear if that is why the woman was crossing the street away from the crosswalk.

The woman was rushed to hospital via emergency run but she succumbed to her injuries some time later.

According to Const. Clint Stibe, debris from the vehicle has been located at the scene and will assist police in tracking down the driver.

The vehicle is described as a metallic four-door Acura TL with a model year between 2012 and 2014.

"You can expect this vehicle will have front-end damage and as a result of what we have seen here will find the vehicle based on the debris that was left behind," Stibbe told CP24.

Police have not released the name of the victim but a man purporting to be her son identified her as Suzanne Pac on Wednesday morning.

The intersection of Dundas and Sherbourne streets was closed while police completed a full reconstruction of the accident, but the intersection reopened at 8:30 a.m.
