An 80-year-old man is dead and police are looking for a hit-and-run driver following a collision in Brampton early Monday morning.

Joginder Singh was fatally struck by a vehicle in a residential neighbourhood while he was on his way to a temple at about 4 a.m., Peel Regional Police said.

Singh was pronounced dead at the scene on Timberlane Drive.

Police said the driver who struck the man drove off, leaving the victim on the street.

Officers are looking for a dark-coloured vehicle that has damage to its bumper and possibly its windshield, police spokesman Const. Thomas Ruttan told CP24.

Ruttan said officers are reviewing video footage recorded by a surveillance camera mounted outside the temple in an attempt to identify the make and model of the vehicle.

The camera points at the street, he said.

Singh’s grandson Karanbir Dhaliwal had fond words for his grandfather, who always checked in on him to have a chat and to see how he was doing in school.

“He just wanted to be my friend, that’s how he was,” Dhaliwal said.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the collision is asked to call police.

Investigators are urging the driver to turn himself or herself in to police.

“Obviously, the person who has done this we would like them to seek out some representation and turn themselves in to police," Ruttan said.
