A 20-year-old man is dead and a 21-year-old man is in police custody after an early-morning illegal street race in Brampton turned tragic.

According to Const. George Tudos, two vehicles were racing in the vicinity of Clark Boulevard and Summerlea Road at around 2:20 a.m. when they collided, sending one of the vehicles into a pole.

The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead on scene while the driver of the other vehicle, Anthony Botelho, was arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing death by street racing.

Police say they are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward.

The victim in the crash has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.
