With a heat alert in effect, temperatures will soar to the low 30s in southern Ontario on Monday in what will be a tune-up for even hotter weather Tuesday.

As Toronto braces for some of the hottest temperatures of the season, there is good news for people who aren’t fans of these oven-like conditions.

The latest stretch of above normal temperatures is expected to continue for just two more days, Environment Canada said Monday.

Until then, people will have to continue to find ways to escape the heat.

With a high of 33 C, humidex values may reach 37 in Toronto on Monday, but they may come close to 40 in the southwestern portion of Ontario, Environment Canada said in a special weather statement.

The UV index will be 9 or very high.

A heat alert was issued by the City of Toronto, which is offering the following tips to stay cool:

  • Drink lots of cool water even before you feel thirsty
  • Go to air conditioned places, including shopping malls, libraries or community centres
  • Take cool showers or baths or use cool, wet towels to cool down
  • Wear loose, light-coloured, breathable clothing and when outdoors wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Avoid the sun and stay in the shade or use an umbrella
  • Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day
  • Never leave seniors, children or pets unattended in a car

Humidex values will hit the low 40s in many areas on Tuesday, with Environment Canada predicting a high of 37 C, along with wind gusts of 50 kilometres-per-hour, a chance of rain in the evening and a risk of a thunderstorm.

Humidex advisories are likely.

According to the special weather statement, less humid and somewhat cooler air is expected by Wednesday, when a high of 27 C is expected.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are highs of 27 C and lows of 17 C.

After significant rainfall in the GTA on Sunday, police are warning people to be cautious near streams and rivers because levels have increased and currents are strong.

As a precaution, people should keep their children and dogs away from riverbanks, police said.
