Three people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on crash on a rural highway near St. Catharines early Friday morning.

The fiery crash involving two vehicles - an eastbound GMC Envoy and westbound Pontiac Grand Am - occurred at a curve on Highway 20, near Victoria Street, shortly after 1 a.m.

Niagara Regional Police spokesman Const. Rich Gadreau said four people were in each vehicle.

The three people who were killed were all in the Grand Am, which burst into flames. The car's fourth occupant suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Gadreau said one of the vehicles crossed into the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on crash in an 80 kilometre-per-hour zone.

Jeff Youngblood told CP24 his father and mother, both in their 60s, and two of their friends were travelling in the Envoy. The group was heading home from Hamilton International Airport after flying in from Calgary.

After the crash, Youngblood’s father was airlifted to a trauma centre in Hamilton to be treated for serious injuries, while his mother and his parents' two friends were treated and released.

The names of the deceased victims have not been released.

Investigators are asking witnesses to call the Niagara Regional Police traffic unit at 905-688-4111.
