A 55-year-old Toronto man is dead following a two-vehicle crash in Vaughan, York police have confirmed.

It happened on Highway 27, north of Rutherford Road, shortly after 2:30 p.m.

According to police, the driver of a car had to be freed by emergency crews after it collided with a dump truck.

"Sadly, the driver in the collision has succumbed to his injuries," police said in a tweet shortly after 3 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured. The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear.

"The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police are being asked to please come forward," police said in a release issued Wednesday afternoon.

The highway is expected to remain closed for several hours.
