Longtime radio and television talk show host Mike Bullard has been charged with criminal harassment and obstruction of justice for allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend.

According to court documents obtained by CTV News Toronto, Bullard allegedly called and text messaged his ex-girlfriend, identified as CityNews journalist Cynthia Mulligan, numerous times, prompting police to charge him with criminal harassment on Sept. 21

He also allegedly breached conditions of an undertaking which prevented him from coming within 100 metres of her home or communicating with her in any way, prompting more charges to be laid on Oct. 13.

The Crown also alleges he contacted her indirectly on Oct. 16 in an attempt to have all charges dropped.

When reached by the Toronto Star, Bullard said the charges stem from a “bad breakup” and it is a “very personal thing.”

He told the Star he called Mulligan twice after the pair broke up.

After the Star cited the information against Bullard, stating he communicated to her more than that, he said he called her “three or four times.”

Mulligan is a Gemini Award-nominated reporter for CityNews who has worked in broadcast journalism for more than 20 years.

Bullard last worked as the host of Beyond the Mic with Mike Bullard on Newstalk 1010.

Scott Henderson, vice president of communications for Bell Media, the parent company for both Newstalk and CP24, said in an emailed statement that Bullard “departed the company on Oct. 5.”

“Other than that, we don’t discuss any details of contractor of employee matters,” Henderson said.

Bullard’s lawyer, Arthur Stern, told Etalk Canada that he was "optimistic that Mike will be exonerated of all of the charges."

Bullard was released on $2,000 bail earlier this month.

His conditions of release state that he must not communicate with Mulligan or come within 200 metres of her home or workplace.

He must also enter into a counselling program.

Since late October, Bullard has been living with his surety, Robert Breckles, at his home in Stouffville.

Bullard is expected to appear in court in Toronto on Wednesday.
