Provincial police are launching a campaign to crack down on aggressive drivers after the force noticed a rise in fatalities this summer.

The OPP says it will be targeting big three risk factors – aggressive driving, failure to buckle up and impaired driving.

Since it launched the Provincial Safety Program in 2008, the number of deaths on the roads fell from 451 the eyar before to 322.

This year, however, there have already been 163 traffic fatalities on roads patrolled by the OPP compared to 154 in the same time period last year.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford says police will step up enforcement for the long weekend.

"We're going to make sure that the enforcement is at the highest level, you're going to be seeing those black and white cruisers," he says.

Woodford says police have seen a specific rise in impaired driving and seatbelt infractions.

OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino also says the increase could be the result of a "statistical aberration."
