WINNIPEG - Industry Minister Tony Clement says he is considering the idea of teaming up with the U.S. to provide a joint bailout of the North American auto industry.

Clement says he'll go on a fact-finding mission to Detroit and Washington next week.

He says a common cross-border aid package is on the table and he'll be talking to American legislators and industry leaders about the idea.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says Canada has already committed up to $450 million to revamping the auto industry, but adds the money can't simply be a bailout.

He says it must help transform the industry to a more viable footing that produces vehicles more consumers want to buy.
