Toronto city council took the first step on Tuesday to rename a local park after fallen police officer Sgt. Ryan Russell.

Ward 20 Coun. Adam Vaughan introduced a motion to rename the Dupont Parkette after the slain officer. The motion was unanimously supported by council members.

The park is on Avenue Road, just steps away from where Russell was struck and killed by a stolen snowplow last month.

Vaughan says the renaming effort is supported by Russell's family.

Toronto and East York community council still need to approve the motion before the park can be officially renamed.
