TORONTO - Motorists using Highway 407 are going to be paying more in 2009.

Starting Feb. 1, peak rates for light vehicles will jump 60 cents to 19.85 cents per kilometre.

Off-peak rates will remain at current levels.

In addition to the tolls, light vehicles will pay a 25-cent fee for each trip, heavy vehicles 50 cents and tractor-trailers 75 cents per trip.

For customers without transponders, the video toll charge video and account fees will fall slightly, while other customers will pay a nickel less for their transponder lease.

The 407 ETR, the company that operates the highway, says the changes are aimed to keep traffic moving while maintaining affordable rates.

It also says it plans to spend more than $70 million on new lanes in 2009.
