Peel police have arrested a suspect after a 40-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed early Saturday morning.

The victim, Brampton resident Mandeep Bhagtana, was hit by a car just before 6 a.m. on Bovaird Drive, east of Kennedy Road. Police say they were notified by motorists who called to report a man lying in the westbound lanes of the roadway.

Bhagtana died later that day in hospital.

Police say several tips from the public helped them find the vehicle involved in the crash, a 2005 white Chevrolet Impala. The car, a licensed taxi, was found in Brampton.

Makhan Lachhar, 64, has been charged with failure to remain at the scene of a crime and careless driving. He is being held in jail and is expected to appear in a Brampton courtroom on Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Peel Regional Police at (905) 453-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
