An 18-year-old woman is recovering after she was shot in the lower back when someone opened fire on a car early Tuesday morning, Toronto police say.

Police said the shooting occurred when three males approached the car - occupied by the victim and two other males - on Vendome Place, near the Don Valley Parkway and St. Dennis Drive, shortly after midnight.

After a brief conversation between the two sides, the males fired at least one gunshot at the vehicle. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital via an emergency run, police told CP24.

Her injuries likely weren't as severe as they could have been because the bullet lost some force when it first passed through the vehicle, police said.

After the shooting, the vehicle carrying the victim continued on to the DVP's ramp at York Mills Road, where the occupants flagged down a passing police car for help.

No one has been arrested.

Police said several witnesses and the female victim are all co-operating with investigators.

Officers are trying to figure out a motive for the incident.
