BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service is experiencing disruptions, Research In Motion acknowledged Friday afternoon.

"Some Canada & LatAm customers report BBM issues. Our support teams are investigating. We apologize for any inconvenience," RIM said in a Tweet Friday afternoon.

Users had been reporting serious delays since Thursday night although some complained their BBM service had been lagging since Thursday morning.

BBM is an extremely popular chat function only available on BlackBerry phones that allows users to send instant messages to other BlackBerry users.

It is unclear how many users are experiencing problems.

The issue does not appear to be isolated to a particular network.
