TORONTO - Toronto Centre MPP George Smitherman was the celebrity swim marshal as dozens of people took part in a polar bear swim in a chilly Lake Ontario today.

It was the second annual polar bear swim aimed at saving Ontario's polar bears.

The event was designed to draw attention to climate change and its effects on polar bear populations.

Smitherman told Toronto television station CP24 "there's power in each and every one of us to do our part" to ensure polar bears have some more of the ice that they need not just to survive but to thrive.

The former deputy premier and Toronto mayoral hopeful says a trip last summer on the Sutton River in northern Ontario where he saw a young male polar bear on a ridge was something he will never forget.
