LIVERPOOL, England - Liverpool says that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 25-year-old Suarez told Liverpool's website Tuesday that "to sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city."

He scored 12 league goals for Liverpool last season and was part of the team that won the League Cup. He also scored in the 2-1 FA Cup semifinal victory over city rival Everton.

Suarez joined Liverpool from Dutch side Ajax in January 2011.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says "there were certainly a few clubs who were interested in him but over the off-season he and I communicated well - and he's committed himself for the long term here now."
