TORONTO - There are spelling bees, geography bees, and brain bees.

Toronto is hosting the International Brain Bee event today.

High school students from Canada and seven other countries will be tested on their knowledge of the brain as they compete for the title of world's best brain.

Judith Shedden, chair of the CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee Committee, says the contests are gaining in popularity.

She thinks it may be because of all the reality TV shows and game shows such as "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

Shedden believes people are in the mood for competition.

She says the spelling bee has been going strong for decades, and with the brain bee, high school students are really gung ho.

Sean Amodeo of Toronto is competing against brainiacs from Australia, Grenada, India, New Zealand, Romania, Uganda and the U.S. in a contest that's part game-show, part lab study.

The prize is a $3,000 scholarship, a trophy and a summer internship in a neuroscience laboratory.
