The Canadian citizen who died in a plane crash in Honduras on Monday was a Toronto man who moved to the Central American country to help others.

Peter Michael Jong was one of 14 people killed when a small Honduran commercial airliner crashed near the town of Las Mesitas. The plane, a Let L-410 Turbolet, was trying to reach a runway in foggy conditions.

Two years ago, Jong and his wife Tamara sold their home and moved to Honduras, where they joined other Jehovah's Witnesses to teach Bible studies and help the community on Roatan Island.

All 14 people on board the Central American Airlines flight to Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa were killed, including a senior government official and a top union leader.

The government declared three days of national mourning in honour of the government officials killed.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

Toncontin airport is considered dangerous because of its short runway and surrounding hills.
