TORONTO - The uncle of a former OPP officer who died from carbon monoxide poisoning is urging the government to make CO detectors mandatory in all homes in Ontario.

John Gignac says there are only a few weeks left before the legislature rises June 2 for the private member's bill to be passed.

He says he's frustrated that the bill has stalled when it could save lives.

His niece, Laurie Hawkins, died with her family in 2008 from carbon monoxide poisoning because her home didn't have a detector.

Conservative Ernie Hardeman introduced the bill a second time a year ago, after the previous version died on the order paper in March 2010.

Private member's bills rarely become law in Ontario, but the previous version of his bill received all party support before the legislature prorogued.
