TORONTO - The Toronto stock market closed lower as energy and mining stocks retreated amid falling prices for oil and copper.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed 81.05 points lower to 13,611.32.

Sliding oil prices helped push the Canadian dollar down 0.65 of a cent to 104.33 cents US.

Oil fell $1.81 to US$109.24 a barrel.

Sentiment was also hurt after payroll company ADP said private sector job growth last month came in below expectations.

And expansion in the U.S. service sector was much lower than expected last month.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 83.93 points to 12,723.58. The Nasdaq composite index was down 13.39 points at 2,828.23 while the S&P 500 index shed 9.3 points to 1,347.32.
