Environment Canada has ended a special weather statement issued for the City of Toronto.

It was ended shortly before 8 p.m.

The weather agency issued the statement earlier in the day warning that the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario could be in for thunderstorms late Monday afternoon and into the evening.

“A sharp and fast moving cold front will bring a sudden end to the warm air and sunshine being experienced across southern Ontario today,” the agency said in its statement.

“This front will race into southwestern Ontario this afternoon, and will reach the golden horseshoe area including Toronto by early this evening, then into eastern Ontario later this evening.”

The statement covered an area from Windsor to Kingston and as far north as Orillia.

“Strong and gusty winds along with showers and isolated thunderstorms will begin suddenly as the front goes through,” Environment Canada said.

Wind gusts of 80 to 90 kilometres per hour were also predicted in some local areas.

The stormy weather is anticipated to taper off into the night and will be followed up by sunny weather and highs of 12 to 16 C Tuesday through Thursday.

While rain could return on Friday and Saturday, the sunshine is expected to be back on Sunday.
