About 50 people were evacuated after a hydrogen sulfide leak was discovered inside a YMCA near College Street and Dovercourt Road Saturday morning.

The leak was discovered around 8:30 a.m.

By 10 a.m. emergency crews had plugged the leak and reopened the building.

No injuries were reported, but paramedics did check over one man at the scene.

"We had a floor polisher located in a storage area that was left charging and the battery was producing hydrogen sulfide gas that was building up in one corner," Toronto Fire Chief Dan Sell told CP24. "After we evacuated the occupants we used positive pressure ventilation fans to pressurize that area and then we provided a means for it to get up the staircase and out to the exterior, where it could dissipate into the environment"

Sell said the incident should serve as a reminder to everyone to make sure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their home.
