TORONTO - Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych has won his first match at the Rogers Cup.

The 24-year-old dispatched Sergiy Stakhovsky in 90 minutes on Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-4 at Rexall Centre.

It was the first big match of what will become a busy day at York University, where three of the top eight seeds are scheduled to play. Roger Federer, ranked No. 3, is scheduled to face Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela in the evening session.

Canadian Frank Dancevic will play in the nightcap on centre court, facing off against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.

Berdych is making his sixth consecutive appearance at the Rogers Cup. He fell to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
